Jonathan Cape & Times Newspapers Ltd, 1973 | Hardback, unpaginated | 22 x 28 cm | First Edition with Invitation

A cult classic of 1970s book design — Alan Aldridge’s psychedelic illustrations transform this adaptation of William Roscoe’s 1807 children’s poem into a dazzling visual fantasia. Combining 28 richly coloured plates with whimsical verses by William Plomer and natural history commentary by Richard Fitter, the book is a tribute to the insect kingdom in a surreal, sumptuous style.

Aldridge, the celebrated art director for Penguin and designer behind iconic 1960s–70s graphics (including Beatles and Elton John projects), here turns his trademark “maximalist” style to a Victorian children’s poem, creating one of the most collectable illustrated books of the decade.

Laminated hardcover, large quarto. Printed in Italy by Amilcare Pizzi, Milan. Includes an invitation to the title ball.

Condition: Very good overall. Clean boards with just a touch of rubbing and light wear to corners. Previous young owner’s name written neatly to front endpaper. Light foxing to prelims, otherwise clean throughout. Binding sound.
