Published on the occasion of exhibitions at Portikus, Frankfurt am Main; Institute of Contemporary Arts, London; and Kunsthalle Zürich, this substantial monograph surveys the elusive and provocative practice of Lutz Bacher.
Ever since her career began in the 1970s, this Bay Area artist has drawn upon fragmentary information from popular culture and her own life to produce works that play with the instability of identity and the all-around trickiness of images. Across artists’ books, installations, sculptures, videos, photographs, paintings and screen prints, Bacher uses images and objects in a physical, visceral manner. Her mixture of bodies and ideas, pop and personal, remains deliberately elusive yet strikingly relevant to contemporary concerns in both art and life.
In this publication, Bacher compiles work spanning 1975 to 2013 into a dense, inventory-like sequence of images and materials, evoking the logic of digital archives. The volume is accompanied by a new essay (in English and German) by Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith.
Minimalist in presentation, the large-format book is bound in plain card covers with subtle blind-embossed imagery to front and rear, and simple typographic treatment. The restrained exterior contrasts with the dense documentation within, reflecting the artist’s conceptual approach.
