John Gerrard’s hauntingly desolate landscapes have redefined contemporary digital practice. Born in Ireland and based between Doblin and Vienna, Gerrard takes not his homeland but the agri-industrial terrains of middle America as subject matter: oil rigs, pig units, grain silos, small towns. His works are overtly realistic yet meticulously fabricated, rendering scenes that are at once convincing, uncanny and tragic.

Animated Scene was presented as a collateral project at the 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia (2009). Consisting of three large-scale projections, each work introduced a virtual environment constructed between 2007–09 by Gerrard and his studio, based on documentary research of the American Great Plains. A fourth work from the same series was shown concurrently at the Palazzo Fortuny as part of Axel Vervoordt’s exhibition Infinitum.

Excellent condition: Minimal surface and edge wear to the covers; internally clean, bright and tightly bound.
