Octopus Books, London, 1979 | Hardcover, 638pp | 15.5 x 22 cm | First Edition
A substantial collection of 42 tales by Edgar Allan Poe, bringing together his Gothic horror, supernatural fiction, mysteries, satire and pioneering detective stories in one volume.
Among the best-known works included are The Fall of the House of Usher, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Masque of the Red Death, The Cask of Amontillado, The Black Cat, The Purloined Letter, The Mystery of Marie Rogêt, The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar and A Descent into the Maelström.
Particularly notable for its atmospheric illustrations by Harry Clarke, whose elaborate, darkly fantastical imagery has become closely associated with Poe's work. The illustrations were originally published in Tales of Mystery and Imagination and are reproduced throughout this edition in black and white.
Bound in dark cloth with large gilt Edgar Allan Poe lettering to the front board and gilt title to the spine. Illustrated endpapers. Retains the striking original illustrated dust jacket.
Very good- vintage condition: Binding shows light general shelf wear, including some rubbing to the edges and corners. Gilt lettering remains bright. The original dust jacket with mild edge wear, rubbing, creasing, etc., particularly around the spine ends, corners and folds. Internally clean and tightly bound, with light age-toning to pages. No inscriptions or annotations.
