A quietly compelling photographic study by British photographer Stephen Gill, A Series of Disappointments turns discarded betting slips into strange, sculptural records of hope, loss and defeat. Gill collected the slips in and around the 71 betting shops then operating in the London Borough of Hackney, photographing the crumpled, folded and twisted papers as individual objects against dark backgrounds. After photographing them, he performed small “autopsies” on the papers to reveal the failed bets concealed within.
Published by Nobody in association with the Archive of Modern Conflict, the book transforms an overlooked fragment of everyday London life into an exploration of chance, frustration, ritual and human expectation.
A distinctive hardcover production in turquoise and purple, with bold geometric graphics and star motifs. The book block is designed to be removable from the outer cover; punched holes allow the individual pages to be expanded and hung from nails or small hooks for exhibition. The first edition comprised 3,000 copies across three different cover designs.
Book design is by Melanie Mues, with the volume printed in Italy on Cyclus recycled paper stock.
Very good- condition: Visible rubbing, handling marks and small spots to the cloth-covered boards. Light wear around edges and corners. Interior pages shown remain clean and present well.
